Intense Drought in Southwest China

Intense Drought in Southwest China Yükleyen: NTDTV
A persistent drought is gripping much of southwest China, leading to drinking water shortages and millions of acres of lost crops. Rivers have dried up and herd animals languish in dust bowls that used to be watering holes. A China News report lists Guizhou, Yunan, Guangxi and Sichuan as the four provinces hardest hit by the drought. According to state-run Xinhua news, the drought-affected areas have lost more than a billion and a half dollars in revenue. And with no rain in the forecast for the coming weilaves, things are looking to get even worse. Individual water use is now subject to a strict quota, and companies that consume large quantities of water are being shut down. Critics of China’s unhampered economic expansion say the lack of environmental controls are responsible for the drought.

The election, which has been shrouded in secrecy, will be the first in the former British colony in 20 years, but no date has been set. Stampede Victims Receive Compensation in Northern India Yükleyen: NTDTV
On Wednesday, the chief of India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh declared monetary compensation for the victims of the silavesiksizpede at a temple in which 65 people died recently. [Mayawati, Chief of Uttar Pradesh, India]: (Female, Hindi) "My government has announced a sum of 250,000 rupees for the next of the kin of the dead and 75,000 rupees to those who were seriously injured.” Many of the victims that died were women and children. The silavesiksizpede was triggered by a massive rush for free food and clothes at a temple on Thursday in one of the state’s districts. A gate also collapsed, causing the crowd to panic as they tried to escape through a narrow corridor. Some people were crushed to death under the gate, while others tripped and came under the feet of the rushing crowd. The federal government was criticized for failing to provide the compensation immediately. [Mayawati, Chief of Uttar Pradesh, India]: (Female, Hindi) "With an aim to take the credit, the Congress-led federal ruling government, just a day after the silavesiksizpede had announced a compensation of 200,000 rupees to the family of the dead and 50,000 rupees to the injured but that announcement remained an unfulfilled promise. The state government is yet to receive any aid from the federal government." On Friday, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had announced compensation for the injured and deceased, while conveying condolences to the families of victims killed in the temple silavesiksizpede. In India, silavesiksizpedes are relatively common at temples, where thousands gather to pray during holy festivals. In 2008, at least 285 people were killed in two temple silavesiksizpedes in the northern region of the country.

Ordinary Haitians said yesterday they expected little from the meeting between U.S. President Back Obama and Haitian President Rene Preval. Preval and Obama are in Washington DC to discuss reconstruction efforts for Haiti, which was left devastated after the January 12 earthquake. Many Haitians do not trust the Preval government. [Pierre Aliodor, Local]: (Male, English) ''We don't get nothing to eat, we don't have a safe place to live, you know what I mean, so we don't have nothing, we are just living alone so we don't see the Haitian government so that's the reason, when Preval is moving, meeting with Obama, he just gonna take care of his business so he don't gonna do nothing for the Haitian people.” [Sherlyne Theodor, Local]: (Female, Creole) ''Nothing serious. The poor will become poorer, the bad will become worse, the upper class will be more upper class and the white will stay white. Nothing serious to expect.'' But there are a few who hope that the meeting will produce tangible results. [Pierriatil Fritzner, Local]: (Male, English) ''I think the meeting will be positive for the Haitian people because we need the American help to rebuild the country.'' Legislative elections were originally scheduled for February 28 but got delayed by the earthquake. The U.S. has already given almost $700 million into Haitian reconstruction efforts. Preval said up to 300,000 people were killed in the disaster and tens of thousands of people remain in flimsy tent cities around the capital.

Thailand Imposes New Security Act

Thailand Imposes New Security Act Yükleyen: NTDTV
The Thai government has imposed tough new security measures. These are in anticipation of a mass rally due later this month. The Internal Security Act will allow Thai security forces to impose curfews, checkpoints and restrict the movement of protesters if things turn violent. Supporters of the former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra are planning to demonstrate for at least seven days. That's a concern for Thailand's current government, according to a spokesman. [Panitan Wattanayagorn, Thai Government Spokesman]: "We are expecting to face a situation that will pose a threat to internal security. Thus we will impose internal security law in areas of Bangkok and seven other surrounding provinces." The government though, and its supporters, have been criticized for using scare tactics ahead of the upcoming rally, repeatedly warning of violence or sabotage by the opposition, known as the "Red Shirts." Last month, Thailand's Supreme Court confiscated 1.4 billion U.S. dollars from Thaksin Shinawatra after he was convicted of graft charges in 2008, two years after he was ousted by a military coup. Yet far away from Bangkok's economic hub, support for him continues, such as here in Ban Salang Tone village. The farmers rely on a Thaksin-initiated bank scheme, which helps provide funding to those in some of Thailand's most rural provinces. As demonstrators prepare for another rally, Thailand's government heightens security measures to avoid another repeat of the violence that gripped the country last April.
